Like I always say, if you find cheap yarn ANYWHERE (Target, Wal Mart, Dollar Tree, etc) then BUY it!!! Yarn is expensive!  But if you want to splurge or feel like going where other knitting enthusiasts go then here are the yarn stores here in Santa Cruz, CA.  They can and will help you if you get stuck.  Most craft stores will give you a free class with a purchase, which I recommend you take if it's your first time making something.
