Ways to Bind off

There are many different ways to bind off or cast off when you are done with a project.  The pattern will tell you which way to do it but the most common method and the method I use most frequently is below.

Instructions:
1. Slip the first stitch off the left hand needle to the right without knitting.
2. Knit the second stitch very loosely on the left hand needle. Now there are two stitches on the right hand needle.
3. Insert the left needle through the left side of the first stitch on the right hand very loose.  Keep the yarn in the right hand very loose so that the second stitch remains loose.
4. Bring the first stitch forward over the second stitch and over the tip of the needle so that the one stitch remains on the needle.
5. Knit the next stitch loosely. There are 2 stitches on the right hand needle again.
6.  Repeat steps 3-5 until the last stitch is slipped over.
7.  Clip your yarn about three inches or more from the needle. Bring the loose end through the stitch remaining on the needle and pull tightly. Darn the loose end so that it will not show.

KnittingHelp.com has every single way to cast off stitches. These videos are the most helpful if you don't understand the written instructions.

Note: Kitchener's stitch is also a way to finish a project and the pattern will tell you if you need to do this method. The kitchener's stitch is used instead of binding off and you use a darning needle to cast off the stitches from two needles by sewing them off. Like when you have close a toe for a sock. You can learn about how to do this from my Stitches Et Cetera blog or from this video
