How To Read A Pattern

Patterns start with what you will need: needle type and size as well as type of yarn.  If you don’t have the right needle, make sure you are using one that is close enough or a substitute.  The project’s size will be different however pretty much the same. If you use a completely different needle than the pattern says, then it may require you to know a different technique.  Again, according to your skill level you can alter your method to what you are most comfortable with.
Gauge is also given at the beginning of the pattern.  Gauge is number of stitches and rows per inch. Gauge is really important when making sweaters so let’s get through the basics first.
Patterns will then begin with how many stitches to cast on.  There are a couple ways to cast on.  One is using your fingers and one needle, the other uses two needles.  Both ways were hard for me to learn at first.  Next it goes row by row with the above abbreviations and numbers like a recipe.

I highly suggest joining www.ravelry.com because of the endless amounts of free patterns and forums in the world.
